Book On Tape Rec Of The Day

Lillian Jackson Braun

As usual, he liked to take the public pulse whenever anything unusual happened, so he stopped at the dimsdale diner and went inside.

He sat at the counter at the only seat that still had its pedestal and said to the half awake counter man,

” I will have a cup of your  famous bitter coffee and  one of your special three-day old donuts.”

The man he shambled away to fill the order.  A cheap radio spluttered in the background.

“Where did you buy that radio?  It has excellent tone. “

“Found it. ” Said the counter man.

Bees honey and murder fill this volume with intrigue and deadpan hilarity.

“Cat Who…” books feature a reporter named Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese cats, Kao K’o-Kung (Koko for short) and Yum-Yum. The first book in the series was written in 1966, with two more following in 1967 and 1968. Eighteen years passed until Jackson Braun published the next book in the series, and through 2007 a new “Cat Who…” title was published with some regularity.

29     The Cat Who Had 60 Whiskers, 2007 (ISBN 978-0399153907): Polly unexpectedly takes a library job in Paris, leaving without even saying goodbye to Qwill, and a gardener’s so-called accidental death does not seem so accidental.

30    The Cat Who Smelled Smoke (ISBN 978-0399154744): The book was supposed to be released in 2008 but was first postponed until 2009 and later canceled by publisher Putnam Books. It remains unfinished.

From above

So Ms L. Jackson Braun took care of Polly’s end  ( Paris library life) but left poor Qwill stuck in the never-never land of an unfinished series…..

Well we can’t have that! So, as I see it Qwill distraught over Polly’s departure decides to travel to Paris (coach of course) ( with his cats of course) and seek out Polly to ask why she never said ta ta but before he knows it he is drawn into a murder investigation after a body is found in the  catacombs under the library where Polly works!!

Together they look for clues along with Yum-Yum and KoKo  and before you can say Bon jour Qwill has decided to stay in his newly renovated flat in Paris as the two cats love the  screened balcony that looks over a huge patio garden below shared by all the other tenants ala Alfred Hitchcock’s rear window.  Soon he discovers amongst his neighbors an old friend of his mother’s cousin who has been searching for him because he (the cousin) has left him a castle in Scotland! His euro stay is cinched.

Why Qwill goes so far as to buy a personal jet ( used of course) that is frequented by Hixie,  Arch, and many other Pick Axe residents as they come to visit and help with sleuthing.  He,  Polly, Yum Yum,KoKo and the Paw spend the rest of their days in transatlantic bliss with summer and falls in Paris  and winter and spring in Pick Axe.

They never marry, their cats simply do not get along!

If anyone has heard of a different ending please send!

“They stood over an oriental rug covered with pretzels  mustard and jelly donuts staring at a checker board where two bodies lay facedown.”
